Hands down. The BEST SE Asian food you will find in the Bay Area. The Hainan chicken & rice is legit legit legit. Their curry noodle. Their fresh veggies. Their sandos. Everything. Is. FRIKKEN. Delicious. Hainan Chicken is melt in your mouth moist, flavors are always on point, generous portions, and most of all - consistent. every. time. Don't let the location fool you. The walk up counter in BayShore makes this a super casual spot you can enjoy under their covered patio. For me, I gotta hit up this spot every time I am in San Francisco, order ahead for takeout, and easily hop back on 101. It's super clear the chef here cares about flavor, quality, and depth. They've done a fantastic job bringing the unassuming but incredibly scrumptious cuisine of SE Asia to the Bay Area in their own yet authentic way. The best part? This is a co-op with Hawker Alley and Chairman Truck's infamous Coca Cola braised pork baos. Which means you get an amazing variety of top quality street food as if you were in Singapore/Malaysia! I could go on about their expansive menu but JUST GO AND CHECK EM OUT already and get yourself hooked on the best kept secret in SF.
Chicken Rice for $14.50 This comes with poached chicken, chicken fat rice, steamed vegetables, KMG sauce, ginger scallion and side of soup. The rice was SO GOOD!!! Super flavorful. I could just eat this everyday. The chicken was good, they gave chicken breast and dark meat. I preferred the dark meat more. Their KMG sauce was pretty spicy and so I just dipped the meat in the ginger scallion sauce.
How have I not written a review for this place yet?! Good Gai's is my fave chicken and rice spot that I have tried so far in the Bay Area. I like what I like and sometimes I am not adventurous so I have only tried their Chicken Rice (poached chicken) and their Crispy Gai (fried chicken). While both are so good with different sauces, I try to be healthier by eating their poached chicken that comes with a marinated rice, poached (but not dry) chicken and some yummy greens with sauce. My hubby taught me a hack to make the rice even tastier and I'm normally not one to like additional oil in my food, but now I cannot eat the rice any other way. We take the ginger scallion oil sauce and mix it with the rice and chicken and the rice is so yummy this way! I still dip my chicken into the green (I believe they call it the KMG sauce) and the whole meal is just perfection (IMO hehe). What really makes them stand out here compared to other chicken and rice spots are their sauces. If you haven't tried them yet, I highly recommend trying them out! Their Oakdale location has outdoor seating only and there's usually plenty of parking.
A hole in the wall type place in SF. Spacious patio seating. Curt and the team create very authentic and delicious Southeast Asian dishes. What I tried: Crispy Gai with GG Red Curry Sauce & KMG sauce -- I prefer crispy chicken versus chicken and rice. Good pairing with the sauces. Chicken Rice with Ginger scallion sauce -- this is such a comforting meal. Simple. Curry Mee Noodle Soup -- love the fish balls. Very unique dish. I shared some with my dad and he liked it! "Hot Honey Mustard" Chicken Salad -- my friend liked the salad! Very colorful. Gai Lo Mein -- the noodles were long and chewy! One of my fave dishes. "Ayam Mentenga" Butter Chicken -- it may not look photogenic but it sure tasted so yummy! Reminded me of orange chicken. Basil Chicken -- so good! With rice and perfectly fried egg! I also tried crispy chicken skins which tasted like chicharrones & side of garlicky greens "balance." Amongst the dishes I've tried, I liked the crispy gai with GG red curry sauce & KMG sauce, gai lo mein, ayam mentenga" butter chicken, basil chicken, and curry mee noodle soup. #supportsmallbusinesses
Good Gia's are good at chicken. Those chicken bowls are delicious and the chicken I got was crispy and tender . Great rice and sauces in the bowls. The broth was excellent. Must retry.
This might be the best spot for Karaage chicken in SF! You get so much for what you pay for, and the dipping sauces that came with the chicken were so good. Their butter chicken was amazing too. It was a great place for a quick bit to eat for lunch. Service is quick and the food is hot and ready! They have some pretty great options on their menu and plenty of outdoor covered seating.
Now here's proof that the pandemic has forced us to do strange things like strolling on Oakdale. I mean, who strolls on Oakdale? It gets very industrial toward the Bayshore end of the street where you spend most of your efforts dodging trucks. I was surprised to see Hawker Alley set up here as it's the same set-up as the one on Kearny deep in the FiDi with The Chairman and Good Gai's sharing the space. There's more space here though with a large covered outdoor seating area set up. You order through a tablet set up in front of the pickup window. No surprise that I ordered the $14 Chicken Rice where they offered a generous portion of poached chicken, both white and dark, on top of the chicken fat rice accompanied by cucumber slices and steamed spinach sprinkled with sesame seeds (photo: https://bit.ly/3wN8YHM). It came with the requisite broth and two dipping sauces, their house KMG sauce and the more traditional ginger scallion mix (photo: https://bit.ly/3uqNFZY). It was delicious and certainly a meal in itself. But I had a weak moment and ordered the $5 Crispy Chicken Skins, which let's admit it, is a Southern-fried indulgence with a definite yum factor but little nutritional value (photo: https://bit.ly/3tH5Ds5). I could only eat a few of them before letting my guilt consume me. I sat in their terraced area, and a surprising number of people were eating here or picking up orders. Good for the proprietors because it showed me that if you make something good, they will come....no matter where you are. FOOD - 4 stars...hearty portions of khao mun gai plus crispy skins if you need the indulgence AMBIANCE - 4 stars...a bit of a poultry oasis near Bayshore SERVICE - 3.5 stars...on time but not much interaction TOTAL - 4 stars...nice to have another poached chicken option in an unexpected place RELATED - Exploring Bayview? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/3AOvRKv
tldr: 4.5/5 if i could. soup is bland. green sauce was soooo delish SUPER tender and flavorful chicken choy was good *flo's tip: get extra rice n chicken compared to rooster and rice (r&r), bruh good gais (gg) knocks r&r out of the park. i'm spending about the same amount of money yet gg offers so much more in quantity AND IN QUALITY. sorry. this review is gonna be a comparison between gg and r&r TASTE WISE, i cannot tell you how good gg was compared to r&r. rice and chicken: gg, the rice was fantastic because it had great flavor and paired so nicely with tender and flavorful chicken and the two sauces that they provide. the chicken is juicy and fatty. u can taste the good quality of chicken. r&r, BLAND and VERY DRY. BOTH RICE AND CHICKEN. sauce: gg had tHREE sauces. the green sauce is soooo good and is my favorite one BY FAR. the green is heavy garlic with a low spice kick and the ginger sauce is lowkey not as good as the ones you can get at chinese butchers but good attempt. the red is sambal. very good, i love sambal :) r&r, one sauce, god that was a bad sauce. SALTY and did not even enhance the rice and chicken's flavor. veggies: they both had cucumbers, they're cucumbers lol. gg had choy, uhhh idk what it's called in english but it was perfectly cooked, my one critique is that the sauce on top is quite overpowering but very reminiscent of chinese style choy. r&r, what vegetable? the cilantro? soup: gg, my biggest dislike was the soup, it was wayyy too bland. it had carrots and white radish but i disapprove of it. r&r has better soup. it was only SLIGHTLY more saltier and you can taste hints of chicken. ok end of my comparison. i would want to get gg more if they aren't so far. because r&r has more branches so they're more accessible. i ordered gg via pickup online and wait time was about 15 minutes? they don't send a text or email notification that your orders ready so ya just gotta go there and ask the front if it's ready. my recommendation, get more rice and chicken. OR just get the rice and chicken and the sauces. that's my rec. i like ya gg, i like ya.
Sheeeeesh... can't believe this has been in my bookmarks for a year. Ordered through Grubhub, definitely dining in next time for the vibes. This is without doubt one of my favorite spots for hainanese chicken and a plus for being located so close to me. Chicken is so tender and juicy you can press on the meat and see it glistening down to the bowl. Can't believe how good the rice was here. Their take on it wasn't the simple boil chicken stock into rice and serve, they fried it up to that perfect texture it complimented the chicken just as well. Their kmg crack sauce was straight fire. Had a little bit of everything most notably a hint of wasabi. So much going on I can't pinpoint everything. Ginger scallion is one of my favorite Chinese sauces, great seeing it in their cuisine as well as the hot sauce. Good choice of veggies with the classic cucumbers and Gai Lan( Chinese broccoli ). They stir fried it in sauce that gave it extra depth of sweetness on top of its slight bitterness. Will be back for more and adding chicken skin to my order! Support your locals!
First, can we talk about how cute the name "Good Gai's" is.... If you're a unicorn that grew up in SF Bay Area then you may remember Good Guys, the electronic store chain that started in SF and expanded all over the Bay Area. All their locations are long gone but I have fond memories of their Stonestown location. When I worked at Stonestown, it's where I would take sneak off to during my "breaks" to plop my arse onto their couches and watch the eye candy, *cough*, I mean some TV. If you happen to be reading this and worked at Good Guys back in the day, yea...I'm THAT creeper. Sorry! So yea. Initially, I thought "Good Gai's" was a play on the electronic store chain but actually, I think it's a play on Chucky, the creepy doll I dressed Tater Tot up as this Halloween. Opps. Opening this week, Good Gai's ("Gai" means chicken) is a new Khao Man Gai Shop in Bayview in the former Gold Corner Café, located in back of McD on Bayshore. It's brought to you by the owner/chef of OG food truck favorite: The Chairman (FKA Chairman Bao). They're open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:30 am - 3 pm for lunch take-out only. There's one bench outside for seating. Good Gai's specialty is KMG: Thai Chicken Rice aka Hainan Chicken Rice, Com Ga Ha Nam, etc. ($13) which is served through a take-out window. Also on the menu are a Caesar Salad ($13) and Crispy Chicken Skins ($5). If you're craving baos, The Chairman's baos are also available. I ordered the KMG Chicken Rice w/ poached chicken, rice, steamed greens, KMG crack sauce, ginger scallion, and side broth ($13): https://bit.ly/2rz2Dko. I also ordered a side of Crispy Chicken Skins ($5): https://bit.ly/2YHrX3I. If you know me, then you know that I'm obsessed with KMG/Hainan Chicken Rice and I'm always seeking it out. Good Gai's KMG is delicious and each component is well-executed. The poached chicken is soft, tender, and moist. What makes Good Gai's KMG different is the chicken....instead of serving the sweet soy on the side, the chicken is finished with sweet soy to keep it super moist. Even the white meat is moist. The chicken rice was perfection - it's nicely separated, shiny, and flavorful. You know they've nailed it when the rice is good enough to eat on its own. That's the case here. The KMG crack sauce is addictingly good, it's savory-garlicky-tangy-spicy-sweet and the ginger-scallion sauce is fragrant. For a side of health, there's several slices of cool cucumber and crisp gai lan (chinese broccoli) to go with your meal. If you love chicharrones, the side of Crispy Chicken Skin is a must! It's fried-to-order so it's served hot, golden, and crackly. They have their own private lot with several parking spaces. There's only one way in/out so it's better to find street parking. While there's several KMG fast-casual shops in SF, Good Gai's has my favorite rendition in SF thus far and is great addition to the SF food scene from popular Bun Master @The Chairman!
